Building with AI: AI Helper for TTM Subscribers

Introducing the AI Prompt Helper: Your New Social Media Assistant...

This week, I'm excited to share something special with you. I've built an AI helper app, and this tool is designed to make your social media content generation easier, faster, and more consistent.

This tool is my gift to you, loyal readers and subscribers of TheTechMargin. To access it, you need to enter your email address. I'll also guide you through how to use the tool and explain its purpose.

The Inspiration Behind the AI Prompt Helper

As many of you know, I'm co-hosting a Women in AI workshop later this month with my entrepreneurial colleague Julia Coit of Capital H. While preparing for this event, I've been reflecting on how challenging AI can be for everyday users.

With years of experience as a software engineer, my goal has always been to build solutions that make things easier and faster, freeing up time for high-value creative thinking. AI is a powerful multi-tool, but it often needs more user interfaces that are efficient and tailored to individual needs. That's why I created the AI Prompt Helper—to simplify the process of generating content while giving you the control to fine-tune your outputs.

AI Safety Bites

California’s AI Safety Bill Vetoed

Governor Gavin Newsom rejected SB 1047, a controversial AI safety bill that had divided the tech community. The bill was vetoed due to concerns that it was not the best approach to protect the public from AI threats and could potentially stifle innovation. Newsom stressed his responsibility to regulate the industry effectively, indicating that the bill did not meet this standard.

What’s Next? With the veto, stakeholders are now laying out their visions for AI legislation. Proponents of the bill, including state Sen. Scott Wiener, vow to continue fighting for AI safety regulations, viewing the veto as a missed opportunity to lead in AI oversight.

Key Staff Leave as OpenAI Rakes in $$$

This week's developments at OpenAI, marked by the departure of CTO Mira Murati and other senior researchers, signal a significant shift towards a more corporate, for-profit model.

This transition poses critical questions about the alignment between OpenAI's rapid structural transformations and its foundational ethical standards. The drive towards an IPO and heightened valuations underscore a potential conflict within the tech industry—balancing profit motives against the ethical deployment of AI technologies.

OpenAI's ongoing projects reflect its efforts to stay at the forefront of AI innovation. Will the pace of innovation at OpenAI compromise the ethical guidelines previously established in a non-profit framework? The answer is yet to be seen, but the company is in no rush to apply the breaks to its breakneck pace. With a monster valuation, this period will be pivotal in determining whether OpenAI can sustain its leadership in AI development without diluting its original mission.

Inspired Design & AI

Duties Studio, founded by childhood friends Paul Conley and Erling Aarønæs, has made a splash with their latest project: creating a unique visual identity for Neural Codex, a non-profit dedicated to simplifying AI and making it accessible to the public. The logo, inspired by neural pathways and ancient codexes, and the use of a serif typeface called Latrik strike a balance between academic rigor and accessibility. Neural Codex serves as a public resource for AI discourse, educating users about AI's capabilities, risks, and implications in a digestible manner. Read more about Neural Codex and their work here.

Becoming More Human than Human

This week, we saw the introduction of OpenAI's Realtime API in public beta. This API enables paid developers to build low-latency, multimodal experiences in their applications. Similar to ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode, the Realtime API supports natural speech-to-speech conversations using six preset voices.

The update allows developers to pass text or audio inputs into GPT-4o and receive responses in text, audio, or both, supporting use cases that don't require low-latency benefits. Previously, developers had to stitch together multiple models to create voice assistant experiences, often resulting in loss of emotion and noticeable latency. The realtime API simplifies this process with a single API call, enabling more natural conversational experiences.

Early Use Cases:

  • Healthify: A nutrition and fitness coaching app that uses the realtime API to enable natural conversations with its AI coach, Ria, while involving human dietitians for personalized support.
  • Speak: A language learning app that uses the Realtime API to power its role-play feature, encouraging users to practice conversations in a new language.

Tip of the Week

People prefer clear applications for tools. AI is a fantastic multi-tool, but this makes AI somewhat cumbersome for the average user who wants to get her task done or improve her writing, etc. The real uplift with AI comes from bespoke, tailored solutions that fit the job at hand.

If you have generated social media content with AI using ChatGPT or Claude, for example, you will be familiar with the frustration that comes with inconsistent results. I made a free tool for subscribers of TheTechMargin to help us get in the right frame of mind when tailoring our prompts. Check out the tool and how to use it here. If you have ideas for AI helpers you would like to try, email me and tell me about them. Your idea might be my next 24-hour build challenge!
